MOSCOW, October 3 (RIA Novosti) - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya condemned the latest escalation of violence in the Libyan city of Benghazi and other areas in a Friday's press release.

The violence has broken out despite calls for a ceasefire made by various forces of the Libyan political spectrum following the beginning of UN-facilitated dialogue earlier in the week, the statement read.

On the eve of a major Muslim religious holiday Eid al-Adha, the UN Mission in Libya called on parties to "redouble their efforts in order to spare the Libyan people further hardship and suffering, and to allow for an environment that will be more conducive for the dialogue planned after the Eid holidays," adding that a ceasefire would be the best possible gift for the Libyans in the holy day.

Last week, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that over 300,000 Libyans are currently displaced and the local infrastructure is damaged.

Libya is currently facing its worst wave of violence since the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi and the subsequent civil war. After the conflict, the country has seen violent clashes between numerous militias, armed with weapons seized from government ammunition depots. According to the Libya Body Count data, the violence in the country has claimed the lives of over 1,700 people in 2014 alone.
