MADRID, October 3 (RIA Novosti) - The vast majority, or 70.8 percent of the population of Catalonia support holding of the referendum on Catalonia's independence from Spain, according to the results of the poll by the Catalan Opinion Studies Center (CEO), released on Friday.

According to the poll, only 22.9 percent of Catalans oppose holding such a referendum and 6.4 percent are undecided.

However, the majority of those questioned, or four out of ten, said that they feel both Spanish and Catalan. Some 27 percent of the population referred to themselves as "Catalan only" and another 22 percent as "more Catalan than Spanish."

Only 5.3 of locals think of themselves as Spanish only.

On September 27, Catalan President Artur Mas signed a decree scheduling Catalonia's independence referendum for November 9. The same day the Spanish government announced that it would block the motion by appealing to the Constitutional Court.

On September 29, Spain's Constitutional Court suspended Catalonia's decree to hold an independence referendum in November.

The following day, the Catalan regional government said they would appeal the decision. Despite the decision of the Constitutional Court, the leader of Catalonia set up a panel on Friday to supervise the referendum.

Catalans have accused the Spanish government of being a drain on the region's budget and constraining its linguistic and cultural autonomy. The government in Madrid claims Catalonia benefits from the union with Spain and already enjoys a wide autonomy.
