MADRID, October 3 (RIA Novosti) – Spain's center-right ruling People's Party (PP) will contest in court the Catalonia President Artur Mas’ decision to set up a committee to supervise the November 9 independence referendum, The Local news outlet reported Friday.

PP head Alicia Sanchez-Camacho told reporters that such a committee "cannot exist" and announced the party would challenge it in court with "conviction and tranquility," according to the media outlet.

On Thursday, Mas appointed a seven-strong supervisory body to oversee the ballot, despite the fact that the Spanish court ordered that the referendum be suspended on Monday.

On September 27, Catalan President Artur Mas signed a decree scheduling Catalonia's independence referendum for November 9. The same day the Spanish government announced that it would block the motion by appealing to the Constitutional Court.

Catalans have accused the Spanish government of being a drain on the region's budget and constraining its linguistic and cultural autonomy. The government in Madrid claims Catalonia benefits from the union with Spain and already enjoys a wide autonomy.
