MOSCOW, October 1 (RIA Novosti) – David Nabarro, who is leading the United Nations (UN) Ebola response, said that the current Ebola outbreak is worse than HIV and SARS, the Sydney Morning Herarld reports.

“I can remember in Africa earlier on in HIV thinking ‘this is an unspeakably awful situation but it will not decimate the population’... though we still lost millions. I watch this [the current Ebola outbreak] and I think it is much nastier than HIV”, Dr. Nabarro said, as quoted by the Sydney Morning Herald.

“I remember working on SARS and being scared, but this is much worse than SARS. It is just spreading faster and faster and faster”, Nabarro further added.

This outbreak, which has been dubbed as the worst Ebola epidemic in history, has already killed 3,091 people and infected at least 6,574, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Health experts fear that if left unchecked, the virus would infect as many as 1.4 million by January 2015, the New York Times reported.
The first Ebola case was identified in the United States, after an infected patient arrived in Texas on a flight from Liberia on Tuesday, the BBC said.
