MOSCOW, September 30 (RIA Novosti) – At least 56 people have been injured in the predominantly student-led protests in Hong Kong, while 89 people have been arrested, CNN reported Tuesday, citing government officials.

According to CNN correspondent Andrew Stevens, thousands of demonstrations stood their ground in Hong Kong early Tuesday.

"They're all ready just in case there is any sort of move by the Hong Kong police," Stevens said.

The Chinese government adopted a more conciliatory approach towards demonstrators Monday, saying it had withdrawn riot police from the protest areas. It urged people to disperse and allow traffic to return to the roads.

On Monday, thousands gathered in Hong Kong in support of a student demonstration by Occupy Central, also known as Occupy Central with Love and Peace (OCLP). The demonstration began on September 26 in protest against Chinese government plans to control the 2017 election in Hong Kong.

Protesters say Beijing has gone back on its pledge to allow universal suffrage in Hong Kong, which was promised a high degree of autonomy when it was handed back to China by Britain in 1997.
