MOSCOW, September 28 (RIA Novosti) - The United States along with the countries comprising the anti-terrorist coalition did not secure a sanction from the Security Council of the United Nations (UN) in its fight against the Islamic State (IS) in Syria and Iraq which risks a sharp deterioration of the situation in the region, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
"It was necessary, of course, to go to the Security Council, it was necessary to cooperate with the Syrian government, which has long declared that it is ready to participate in the interaction with the international community in the fight against terrorism. Well, they went around it. This is wrong, it does not add to the legitimacy of what is happening, it creates risks that any unprovoked, accidental incident can greatly escalate the situation," Lavrov said in an interview with Rossiya-1 broadcaster and Russia Today TV channel.
Lavrov pointed out that the United States began to fight terrorism in the region, "and woke up only when their citizens were quite brutally stabbed to death in public in front of the cameras."
"While we have long warned that these people cannot even be temporary companions just because they are fighting against Assad in Syria," said Lavrov.
Then when the United States, "declared the task to defeat ISIS [Islamic State]," they "soon after began to assemble a coalition, understanding that it would be difficult to do it alone."
"I very much hope that the United States will finally realize that it is necessary not to take the role as a prosecutor, judge, and executioner everywhere, and understand that they cannot do anything acting alone," said Lavrov.
According to the minister, "life is meant to teach everyone to work together and not to take the insults personally."
Earlier this month, US President Barack Obama revealed a strategy to defeat the Islamic State, a Sunni extremist group seizing vast territories in both Iraq and Syria, proclaiming a caliphate on all of its captured territories. US plans included the formation of an international coalition aimed at fighting IS militants. The coalition is comprised of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, together with Egypt, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon. The airstrikes on Iraq were later joined by the United Kingdom, Denmark, France, Belgium. In an effort to halt the ongoing conflict, the United States also plans to provide equipment and training to Kurdish and Iraqi forces and Syria's moderate opposition.
The United States expanded its operations against the Islamic State (IS) to Syria on September 26, launching airstrikes on areas controlled by IS militants.
The United States has been carrying out airstrikes against the IS on Syrian territory without any formal permission from Damascus.
On Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov questioned the legality of the US airstrikes in Syria as the action was taken without the formal approval and cooperation of Syrian government.
