UNITED NATIONS, September 27 (RIA Novosti) - All actions against Islamic State (IS) militants and other extremists in the Middle East must be carried out with consent of legitimate authorities, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told reporters in New York, where he attended the UN General Assembly.

"No matter what countries do to fight [the IS], they cannot ignore the nations and legitimate states, which should be notified about such actions, their permission should be requested," Rouhani said.

In June, the Islamic State jihadist group proclaimed a caliphate on the vast areas it had seized across Iraq and Syria. Following the group's rapid advance, Washington launched airstrikes and drone attacks against the insurgents on the Iraqi territory in August.

In September, US President Barack Obama revealed a strategy of fighting the rising terrorism threat in the Middle East. The plan includes the establishment of a broad international coalition and resorting to airstrikes on the Syrian territory, which began earlier in this week.

Washington has said it had notified Syria of the upcoming attacks, though, without requesting any official permission.
