UNITED NATIONS, September 26 (RIA Novosti) – The situation in Ukraine is the result of the crisis of the European security system, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Friday.

"The crisis of Europe's entire security system occurred not as a result of the events in Ukraine, on the contrary, the events in Ukraine have become a reflection of the deep controversies that have been building up in the Euro-Atlantic [region]," Lavrov told reporters on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York.

The Russian Foreign Minister noted that after the end of the Cold War "it was agreed that security needs to be indivisible and universal for the entire Europe, but in action, this was not the case."

Ukrainian crisis burst out after a regime change resembling a military coup, which took place late February.

After the ouster of president Victor Yanukovich, citizens of Ukraine's former republic of Crimea who refused to recognize the legitimacy of the new government, held referendum where the majority of population voted for reunification with Russia.

In April, the Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation against the pro-independence movement of the country's southeast, which also saw new Kiev government illegitimate. The United States and the European Union have thoroughly supported Kiev's actions and have been unjustifiably blaming Russia for meddling in Ukraine's internal affairs.

A ceasefire agreement between Kiev and independence supporters in eastern Ukraine was established on September 5 during a meeting of the trilateral Contact Group on Ukraine in Minsk.

The five-months long conflict has killed over 3,000 people and wrecked havoc on Ukraine's economy, also leading to the biggest confrontation between Russia and the West since the Cold War.
