The former Attorney General for England and Wales, Conservative MP Dominic Grieve, has told MPs Friday that the "legal framework" exists to extend military operations against Islamic State (IS) in Syria as well as Iraq.

LONDON, September 26 (RIA Novosti), Mark Hirst – The former Attorney General for England and Wales, Conservative MP Dominic Grieve, has told MPs Friday that the "legal framework" exists to extend military operations against Islamic State (IS) in Syria as well as Iraq.

Grieve, who was the Chief Legal Adviser to the British Government until July 2014 told the Commons Friday, "So far as the legal framework is concerned I have not the slightest doubt that the framework exists to take action in support of the Iraqi Government at its request to deal with IS.

"Equally, so far as action in Syria is concerned, should the House ever be minded to pursue that option, then it does seem to me that the preconditions for action in Syria are also present," Grieve said.

"There is the right of self-defence of the Iraqi Government when some of the attacks are clearly coming across the Syrian border," Grieve added.

"Secondly because of the doctrine of humanitarian necessity in terms of intervention to protect the population in northern Syria from the attacks of IS," he said.

Grieve dismissed any requirement for a resolution of the United Nations Security Council allowing for military action in Syria.

"The ability to intervene [in Syria] exists even if no resolution is present," Grieve said.
