MOSCOW, September 25 (RIA Novosti) - The Islamic State (IS) terrorist group has destroyed the Arbaeen Wali shrine in Iraq, Al Arabiya reported Thursday, citing a security source.

According to Al Arabiya, IS militants bombed the shrine located along the road connecting the Iraqi cities of Tikrit, Mosul and Baghdad.

The shrine is known for accommodating the tombs of 40 Muslim martyrs from the seventh century AD.

Earlier in September, the IS reportedly blew up the citadel of Saladin, a medieval Muslim leader in Tikrit.

The IS jihadist group become active in Syria and launched an offensive on Iraq in 2014. Its rapid advance led the United States to resort to airstrikes against the group on Iraqi soil back in August. Afterward, US President Barack Obama outlined a strategy to fight rising terrorist activity in the Middle East, which involved the establishment of a multinational coalition.

Earlier in the week, the United States, accompanied by allied Arab countries, launched strikes in Syria using aircraft and drones. Airstrikes on Thursday killed 14 IS fighters, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
