MOSCOW, September 23 (RIA Novosti) – The Ad Hoc Liaison Committee meeting on the Palestinian crisis, held at the United Nations’ headquarters in New York, has stressed the importance of international aid for the reconstruction of Gaza after the Israeli military operation, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday in a press release.

"The forum allowed a deeper consideration of the social-economic and humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories, primarily in the Gaza strip, which has been subject to massive destruction in the course of the recent conflict with Israel. The need for the measures, taken by the international community in order to restore Gaza's infrastructure, bring the local population back to normal living conditions, has been confirmed," the statement reads.

The ministry also underscored the importance of ensuring the ceasefire agreement between Tel Aviv and Palestinian militia for the successful reconstruction of Gaza.

During the UN General Assembly session, UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in the Near East commissioner general Pierre Krahenbuhl met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov, noting the positive effect of Russia's $2 million payment made in 2013.

The Ad Hoc Liaison Committee is a 15-nation group promoting dialogue between donors, Israel and the Palestinian Authority. The committee’s Monday's session included UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Tzachi Hanegbi, US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.

Earlier in September, the United Nations brokered a reconstruction agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority to start reconstructing areas destroyed by Israel’s military operation against Hamas. According to UN estimates, more than 2,100 Palestinians and 71 Israelis have been killed in the conflict.
