MOSCOW, September 21 (RIA Novosti) - Ashraf Ghani, a former finance minister of Afghanistan, was declared the country's next president on Sunday, shortly after reaching a government unity deal with his rival Abdullah Abdullah.

"The Independent Election Commission declares Dr. Ashraf Ghani as the president, and thus announces the end of election process," the head of the body Ahmad Yousaf Nuristani told the press Sunday, as quoted by Agence France-Press (AFP).

Further details, including voting numbers and the turnout, are yet to be revealed.

The results for Afghanistan's presidential elections, held in June, were released on July 7, showing Ashraf Ghani having garnered 56 percent of the votes. However, his contender Abdullah Abdullah labeled the elections as fraudulent and said he would form his own government, regardless the announced results. The deal paving the way for a full audit of votes in Afghanistan was brokered by US Secretary of State John Kerry in August.

Earlier on Sunday, the two candidates signed a power-sharing agreement, following weeks of negotiations. According to the deal, Ghani is to become the president, while Abdullah will occupy the newly-created position of chief executive, similar to the role of prime minister. Ghani is expected to take oath within a week.
