LONDON, September 19 (RIA Novosti) – Unlock Democracy, a British grassroots campaign for democracy, rights and freedoms, launched a petition Friday for a UK Constitutional Convention, following Scotland’s decision to remain part of the United Kingdom.

“The energetic debate in Scotland has motivated people across the UK to talk about how remote government can feel and why we need change. Now the people of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales need to come together to decide what powers should be held at the center and what should be exercised locally. It is time for a UK Constitutional Convention,” the authors of the petition wrote on the Unlock Democracy website.

The petition has four provisions, which state that “party leaders must establish a UK Constitutional Convention”, “the sharing of power between the four UK countries must be decided”, “the convention should examine how power should be decentralized” and “must include both politicians and the public.”

Earlier on Friday, UK Prime Minister David Cameron vowed to deliver on broader devolution of power to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in the next parliament.

“Lord Smith of Kelvin, who so successfully led Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games, has agreed to oversee the process to take forward these devolution commitments with powers over tax, spending and welfare all agreed by November and draft legislation published by January,” Cameron said after the results of the Scottish independence referendum were made public.

With all ballots counted, Scotland has chosen to stay in the United Kingdom with 44.7 percent of Scottish people having voted in support of independence and 55.3 percent having voted against.

The independence referendum, which took place on Thursday, September 18, saw a turnout of 84.59 percent.
