China contemplates imposing limitations on greenhouse gas emissions, but has not decided how to do this yet, Xie Zhenhua, one of Beijing's key negotiators on climate change, told The Financial Times on Friday.

MOSCOW, September 19 (RIA Novosti) - China contemplates imposing limitations on greenhouse gas emissions, but has not decided how to do this yet, Xie Zhenhua, one of Beijing's key negotiators on climate change, told The Financial Times on Friday.

"If we want the carbon dioxide emissions peak to happen earlier, we may have to impose absolute controls. So we are preparing controls on energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. But at the moment we are debating, we are still preparing a plan and getting ready for action," Xie was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

According to the newspaper's estimates, China is likely to reach a peak of greenhouse gas emissions around 2050. He Jiaikun, who chairs China's Advisory Committee on Climate Change, has urged Beijing to include an absolute cap on CO2 emissions in its next five-year economic plan, which is to start in 2016. However, the Chinese industry opposes to the approach, The Financial Times said.

The Chinese delegation will announce positive moves concerning the management of its greenhouse gas emissions at the UN climate summit, scheduled for next week, Xie told Reuters on Friday.

New York will host UN Climate Summit on September 23 within the framework of the UN General Assembly's 69th session. The summit is organized by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in order to speed up the preparation of a new international agreement on joint actions to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.

China, which accounted for about 24 percent of the world's total carbon emissions in 2010, will send Vice-Premier Zhang Gaoli to the summit.
