TOKYO, September 19 (RIA Novosti) – Japan will send $22.7 million for urgent humanitarian aid to displaced persons in Iraq and to Syrian refugees in Lebanon, who are suffering from the actions of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization, the Japanese Foreign Ministry stated.

"Now, according to the UN data there are about 1.8 million displaced persons in Iraq and in Lebanon, 1.18 million refugees from Syria, which is a quarter of the Lebanese population. Given this situation, the government of our country, in response to the appeals of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees [UNHCR] and other international organizations, has decided to offer both countries the urgent humanitarian assistance grant in the amount of $22.7 million," the ministry stated.

Taking this sum into account, the total amount of Japanese assistance to the world community to combat the IS stands at $25.5 million.

It is expected that the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will announce his government's decision at the UN General Assembly next week. According to previous media reports, he will also announced the assistance of about $25 million to restore the infrastructure of the Gaza Strip at the meeting.

The IS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) or Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, it launched an offensive in Iraq and seized vast areas in both countries, proclaiming an Islamic caliphate on the territories under its control.
