MOSCOW, September 19 (RIA Novosti) - J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series of novels, who believes Scotland would be better off staying part of the United Kingdom, closely followed the Scottish referendum and called it peaceful and democratic on Friday, noting that the Scots had a reason to be proud of it.

"[I have] been up all night watching Scotland make history. A huge turnout, a peaceful democratic process: we should be proud," Rowling said in a tweet.

Earlier, the writer expressed her support for the unity with the United Kingdom and donated nearly a million pounds to the Better Together campaign, aimed at persuading voters in Scotland to abandon the idea of independence.

The referendum took place Thursday. With the tallying of votes complete in 31 out of 32 Scottish regions early Friday, Scotland is projected to reject independence by a substantial margin of nearly 10 percent.

According to the most recent results, 55.42 percent voted against seceding the United Kingdom while 44.58 percent supported independence.
