MOSCOW, September 19 (RIA Novosti) – Ukraine will get an additional $1 billion of financial guarantees from the United States and will be provided with assistance in the sphere of security, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko wrote on his Facebook page Friday, following a meeting with US President Barack Obama.

"Discussed with the President of the United States the question of security, economic and financial cooperation," Poroshenko said.

"Agreed with Barack Obama that Ukraine will get an additional 1 billion dollars of financial guarantees from the United States. Ukraine will also get additional help in ensuring security," Poroshenko added.

The Ukrainian president also thanked Obama for "a fruitful dialogue."

On Thursday, Obama rolled out a $53 million aid package to Ukraine that includes general military help.

Earlier on Thursday, President Poroshenko made an emotional plea to US Congress in a bid to convince US lawmakers that Ukraine was "on the forefront of the fight for democracy" and needed strong US support, including a special status with NATO and supplies of heavy weapons.

In an interview with CNN, which followed Poroshenko's meeting with the US president, the Ukrainian leader said Obama had declined to give Ukraine a special status of a non-NATO ally.
