The Chairman of the pro-Scottish independence campaign, Dennis Canavan, told RIA Novosti in the early hours of Friday that he remains optimistic his side will win the Scottish independence referendum as counting across Scotland continues.

EDINBURGH, September 19 (RIA Novosti), Mark Hirst – The Chairman of the pro-Scottish independence campaign, Dennis Canavan, told RIA Novosti in the early hours of Friday that he remains optimistic his side will win the Scottish independence referendum as counting across Scotland continues.

“I remain optimistic about the outcome. We have one [YouGov] poll from today that shows the No side will win, but there is only one poll that will count,” Canavan told RIA Novosti.

“We will accept the result whatever that is and I would hope everyone in Scotland, whether they voted Yes or No, will unite to try to build a better Scotland, even though I have to accept it will be much more difficult trying to build a better Scotland if it’s a No vote,” Canavan added.

At 10 p.m. local time (9:00 GMT), referendum polls closed at 5,579 voting stations in 32 councils across Scotland, with official results expected to be announced between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. local time on Friday.

A final poll by YouGov showed that 54 percent of the voters have chosen Scotland to stay a part of the United Kingdom.

If the majority of Scots votes "yes" in the referendum, then on March 24, 2016, Scotland will become independent from the United Kingdom.
