PARIS, September 15 (RIA Novosti) – Russia has put forward an initiative to prepare within the framework of the UN Security Council a study of terrorism and to call an international conference for the purpose, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday.

"We put forward an initiative, to be considered by all regional and international powers, of launching a well-prepared international conference for a deep and comprehensive study into the problems of extremism and terrorism in the Middle East and North Africa, to be held under the UN Security Council mediation," Lavrov said.

"We spoke in favor of starting to prepare a substantive, profound and all-encompassing analysis via the UN Security Council," the Russian minister told reporters. "I hope we will be heard."

Speaking at an international conference on the situation in Iraq in Paris, attended by EU, UN and Arab League representatives, Lavrov noted that apart from taking steps in the direction of a broad goal of "initiating an all-encompassing, deep analysis of the terrorist threat in all its aspects," Russia is also providing military support to Iraq and Syria in their fight against terrorists.

"We are providing military support to Syria and other countries in the region, which are facing a serious terrorist threat – they are our partners in Egypt, Libya, Yemen and Jordan. There is an input we can make to the collective efforts in this direction, providing security in Iraq by consolidating the society and mobilizing forces to fight terrorism and extremism," Lavrov said.

Syria and Iraq are currently battling Islamic State (IS) militants which have intensified their attacks after US President Barack Obama authorized selective airstrikes against IS positions.

The IS, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), is a radical Sunni group, which has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012, but also started launching attacks in the northern and western regions of Iraq in June.

The IS has announced the establishment of a caliphate on all the territories under its control, forcing thousands of people, mostly members of religious and ethnic minorities, to flee.

According to the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), over 30,000 militants are believed to be currently fighting for the IS.
