GLASGOW, September 14 (RIA Novosti) - The First Minister of Scotland and leader of the pro-Scottish independence campaign, Alex Salmond, has spoken out publicly for the first time about the issue of bias in the BBC's referendum coverage.

"Yes, absolutely, of course it is [biased]," said Salmond, responding to a question from the Sunday Herald newspaper about whether he thought the BBC's referendum coverage had been biased.

"It's the unconscious bias which is the most extraordinary thing of all," Salmond added.

According to Salmond, if BBC were covering any referendum anywhere in the world, they would have done it "impeccably" and in a balanced way. "What they don't understand is they're players in this," Salmond explained.

The BBC is a publicly funded state broadcaster, the biggest in the UK and the largest broadcaster in the world by employees with 23,000 staff.

A referendum on whether Scotland should be an independent country will take place on September 18.
