MOSCOW, September 12 (RIA Novosti) – The Syrian Kurdish party is in favor of constitutional recognition of the rights of Kurds, while wanting to preserve a united Syria, plenipotentiary representative of the Kurdish party Democratic Union Ali Muhammad said at a roundtable at RIA Novosti.
"I want to emphasize that our party stands for a united Syria. But with constitutional recognition of the rights of the Kurdish population," Ali Muhammad stated.
He also said that charges towards his Party of wanting to split Syria were false.
The news comes after the Kurdistan Parliament in Iraq approved the establishment of an electoral commission in the region and the commission to conduct a referendum on the status of the region and the disputed territories in August, which caused discontent within the Iraqi central government.
The Kurdish people, with a population of more than 30 million, mostly inhabit the Kurdistan region, spanning across territories in Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey. Up to 3 million Kurds, or 15 percent of the population, live in Syria. Kurdish nationalist movements in some of the countries of the Middle East pursue autonomy as the nation has no state.
