MOSCOW, September 11 (RIA Novosti) - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to continue the dialogue with Moscow and to maintain the ceasefire agreement with the country's pro-independence forces, UN Spokesman Stephane Dujarric told the press Thursday.

"President Poroshenko updated the Secretary General on the situation in Eastern Ukraine. The Secretary General encouraged the President to continue on the path of dialogue with Russia and to sustain the existing ceasefire," the official said.

Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Alexander Lukashevich said the ceasefire in Ukraine is very fragile with the Kiev authorities strengthening their military in various areas. However, on Wednesday Kiev claimed the ceasefire was observed by both sides.

Since mid-April, Kiev has been carrying out a military operation against the pro-independence movement of the country's South-East. According to the latest UN estimates, over 2,700 people have been killed in fighting. During the meeting of the Contact Group on reconciliation of the Ukrainian crisis held September 5 in Minsk, the representatives for the pro-independence forces and the Ukrainian government agreed on a ceasefire, subsequently accusing each other of violating the agreement.
