MOSCOW, September 11 (RIA Novosti) – The 25th annual Salt Lake AIDS Walk organized by the Utah AIDS Foundation is scheduled to take place Saturday, September 20.

"The Salt Lake AIDS Walk is an important way for us to raise awareness in the community and raise critical funds to provide services to those impacted by HIV/AIDS in Utah," Stan Penfold, Executive Director of the Utah AIDS Foundation, said in an interview with ABC 4 Utah Wednesday.

The Utah AIDS Foundation is partnering with the City Creek Center to organize this year's AIDS walk in the capital of Utah. The walk will start in downtown Salt Lake City and will follow a route through the city.

Founded in 1985 by a small group of volunteers, the Utah AIDS Foundation provides support services to those infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), and prevention services for people at risk of HIV infection.

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is the end-stage result of HIV infection. By the time someone develops AIDS, the virus has significantly damaged the body's immune system. Thus, people with AIDS develop diseases that most healthy people can normally resist or control.

Since the virus can enter the brain and other organs throughout the body, many people with AIDS have trouble with movement, memory and normal bodily functions.

HIV is transmitted primarily via unprotected sexual intercourse, contaminated blood transfusions, hypodermic needles, and from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding.
