MOSCOW, September 11 (RIA Novosti) – The Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi has called on the international organization to support Iraq in its war against terrorist organizations in a phone conversation with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Shafaq News reported Thursday.
Abadi stressed the importance of the role of the United Nations in supporting Iraq in many areas and contributng to the creation of an international position supporting him in his war against terrorist organizations, the news outlet reported.
The new prime minister noted that Iraq plays a key role in the region and everyone must assist it with the challenges it faces.
Ban Ki-moon congratulated Abadi on the formation of a new government in Iraq and expressed support for the authorities" security efforts.
Iraq is currently struggling to defeat the Islamic State, a Sunni Jihadist group formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), which gained strength while fighting the Syrian government and then extended its attacks to northern and western Iraq in June. The group declared a caliphate on the territories under its control.
