MOSCOW, September 11 (RIA Novosti) – The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed $50 million to support the battle against Ebola and its further transmission, statement on the official website of the foundation reads.

"To date, the Gates Foundation has committed more than $10 million of the $50 million to fight the Ebola outbreak, including $5 million to WHO for emergency operations and R&D assessments and $5 million to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to support efforts in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea to purchase essential medical supplies, coordinate response activities, and provide at-risk communities with life-saving health information," reads the statement published on the foundation's website on Wednesday.

The foundation is set to release immediate funds to United Nations agencies and international organizations currently involved in the battle against the epidemic. It will also cooperate with partners from both public and private sectors to expedite all procedures connected with treating patients and containing any further transmission of the disease, including therapies, vaccines and diagnostics.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was founded by the spouses Bill and Melinda Gates and operates a number of programs, including charity and educational, across the world.

The worst Ebola epidemic in history began in southern Guinea at the end of 2013 and soon spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. There is no officially approved medication for the Ebola virus, and experts claim prevention is the only cure. Several countries, including Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan are currently working on vaccines.
