MOSCOW, September 8 (RIA Novosti) – At least 3,000 people have fallen victim to the conflict in eastern Ukraine, UN Human Rights High Commissioner Zeid Ra'ad al Hussein said Monday.

“We remain concerned about the situation in Ukraine. OHCHR's latest monthly report gives a full picture of current human rights challenges, especially in the east, where at least 3,000 people have been killed since mid-April this year,” al Hussein said in the opening statement of his maiden speech to the UN Human Rights Council.

Earlier, the United Nations reported that between mid-April and August 27, more than 2,500 civilians were killed in Ukraine with about 6,000 having been wounded.

On September 3, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a seven-point peace plan for Ukraine, urging Kiev to withdraw its troops from the country’s southeastern regions.

On September 5, representatives from Ukraine, Russia and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) agreed to a ceasefire between Kiev and independence supporters during the meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine in Minsk. The ceasefire started at 15:00 GMT the same day.
