MOSCOW, September 8 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow will increase its cooperation with the BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – on health issues, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Monday.

“After the G8 cooperation came apart, and not because of us, the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s considerate attention is focused on increasing the health issues cooperation with the BRICS countries,” Ryabkov said at the international medical media forum held at news agency Rossiya Segodnya’s headquarters in Moscow.

The diplomat noted that Russia will chair the BRICS in 2015 and it wants the five countries to reach agreements on health cooperation, including cooperation in treating noncommunicable and infectious diseases, biomedical science and the development of effective mechanisms to assess the quality and the accessibility of health care.

Russia will chair the BRICS group from January 1, 2015. The BRICS summit is scheduled for July 9-10 and will be held in the Russian city of Ufa together with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. Russia is developing a number of major initiatives aimed at expanding investment cooperation. The preparation of the draft strategy for multilateral economic cooperation is underway as well.
