BRUSSELS, September 8 (RIA Novosti) – The European Commission confirms that another package of sanctions against Russia may get its final approval Monday, Commission Spokeswoman Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen said.

“And now we've reached the stage where the package has been agreed at the level of Coreper [the Permanent Representatives Committee] and the package is due to be formally adopted by the member states through written procedure later today, so the procedure is ongoing,” Hansen said.

She said the details of the measures will be known after being published by the EU Journal Tuesday.

On September 5, a number of European politicians said the European Union would announce its final decision regarding new economic sanctions against Russia on Monday.

On September 7, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said the European Union is ready to review new sanctions if a ceasefire between the Kiev government and independence fighters in southeastern Ukraine holds.

Brussels and Washington began imposing economic sanctions against Moscow since Crimea’s reunification with Russia in March, which the West considers illegal and Russia claims to be fully legitimate. The latest round of restrictions has, in particular, limited the raising of capital in the European Union for a number of Russian banks.

In response, Moscow issued a one-year ban on certain food product imports from the United States, the European Union, Australia, Canada and Norway.
