No procedures exist to exclude Russia from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) or to revoke its veto right, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

MOSCOW, September 6 (RIA Novosti) - No procedures exist to exclude Russia from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) or to revoke its veto right, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

“There are no procedures for that. Everything that has been said on this – are empty political declarations. The UN Charter strictly defines the composition of the Security Council, powers of its members, and the general goals of the Council. Speaking hypothetically, this will require changing the UN Charter. But this is practically impossible and nobody will do that,” Gatilov said about the possible reform of the UNSC and the review of Russia’s role in it.

Gatilov also reminded that French President Francois Hollande spoke with the initiative to restrict veto power at UNSC.

“There will be a meeting in New York and we will present our position over the issue. Let’s see what this discussion will end up with,” the diplomat said.

“The French say that permanent members of the Security Council should renounce veto right in cases of massive human rights violations, genocide and so on. In principle, this is not a new idea, it circulated some time ago. The idea is ambiguous, it demands very serious consideration,” Gatilov told RIA Novosti.
