NEWPORT (UK), September 4 (RIA Novosti) – NATO will allocate about 15 million euro ($19.4 million) in financial aid for Ukraine, Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Thursday.

“We will provide advice to help Ukraine with defense reforms and allies will assist Ukraine with around 15 million euro through NATO and in addition to that we have heard several announcements of bilateral assistance, financially and in other ways,” Rasmussen said after the meeting of the Ukraine-NATO commission at the level of heads of states and governments.

The alliance has established a comprehensive package of measures to help Ukraine better provide for its security, according to the NATO chief.

“We will focus on cyber defense, logistics and command control and communications. We will also help with rehabilitation for troops injured in the conflict,” Rasmussen said.

Since mid-April the Ukrainian government has been conducting a military operation against independence supporters in eastern Ukraine, who refused to acknowledge the new government that came to power after a coup in February.

Ukraine’s southeastern regions are currently in a state of humanitarian catastrophe, with citizens struggling without water and electricity.

According to UN estimates, fighting has killed over 2,500 people and injured over 6,000.
