TIRASPOL, September 2 (RIA Novosti) - Transnistria is going to use South Ossetia and Abkhazia’s experiences in gaining Russia’s recognition of their independence, Transnistria’s foreign ministry press service reported Tuesday, citing the unrecognized country’s foreign minister.
“South Ossetia has a unique foreign policy experience of international recognition by the Russian Federation and other countries,” Transnistrian Foreign Minister Nina Shtanski was quoted as saying at a meeting with the South Ossetian delegation at Transnistria’s Independence Day ceremony on Tuesday.
“This unique experience will be used by the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic [Transnistria], since the international recognition of PMR, I am certain, will happen in the near future,” she added.
Before the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Transnistria, a region with a predominantly Russian and Ukrainian population broke away from the Soviet republic of Moldova, fearing its government could seek reintegration with neighboring Romania. This triggered Moldova’s offensive on the region, after which it lost control over the Dniester River’s left bank. Joint peacekeeping forces from Russia, Moldova and Transnistria are maintaining order in the disputed territory.
