KIEV, September 2 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council will not comment on Donetsk and Luhansk’s request for special statuses, and is instead waiting for the next trilateral contact group meeting scheduled for September 5, a council spokesperson told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

“On [September] 5 the next meeting will take place. Let us wait for what the conclusions and results will be,” Andrei Lysenko said.

On Monday, representatives from the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics announced their position on negotiations in Minsk, Belarus, urging Kiev to acknowledge their special status. In exchange, they have promised to take all efforts to keep Ukraine unified.

The same day, the press service for Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko revealed his plans to raise the issue of recognizing the Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics as terrorist organizations on his upcoming visit to the United States.

The contact group on the peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian conflict consists of Russia, Ukraine, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), as well as representatives from southeast Ukraine.

In mid-April, Kiev launched a military operation in eastern Ukraine, where the people refused to recognize the newly instated government. In May, following regional referendums, the cities of Donetsk and Luhansk proclaimed themselves people’s republics. Both cities have witnessed humanitarian catastrophe due to constant shelling and lack of basic supplies.
