UNITED NATIONS, August 30 (RIA Novosti) - A Serbian police officer and two other people were killed in an attack in Kosovo, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Kosovo Farid Zarif said at a debate of the UN Security Council Friday.

“The incidents which took place in or around Kosovo during the past 36 hours, near the villages of Orlovac and Kushtove / Kosutovo, resulting in at least three fatalities, including a Serbian police officer. Preliminary information suggests armed persons involved in illegal wood-cutting were likely responsible for the incidents,” Zarif said.

“In sensitive areas such as the location of these incidents, great care should also be taken not to given reign to speculation of political motives,” Zarif said at the UN Kosovo debate, adding that "volatility that still characterizes the north-south divide in the Mitrovica region.”

Many in the region also a distrust of the European Union's EULEX mission, which supports Kosovo in greater European integration in the rule of law area.

“In northern Kosovo, arrest warrants recently requested by a EULEX prosecutor and issued by a EULEX pre-trial judge in the Basic Court of Mitrovica against the current and former Mayors of Zubin Potok have significantly added to the unease in local sentiments,” Zarif said.

The UN Mission in Kosovo will continue to exerting its efforts in support of the political progress and help "redress the shorter-term challenges as and when they appear,” Zarif said.
