The defense of Russian citizen Roman Seleznev, accused of cyber fraud in the United States, will once again appeal to change his imprisonment regime from special to general early next week, the Russian Consul General told RIA Novosti.

MOSCOW, August 29 (RIA Novosti) - The defense of Russian citizen Roman Seleznev, accused of cyber fraud in the United States, will once again appeal to change his imprisonment regime from special to general early next week, the Russian Consul General told RIA Novosti.

“They have confirmed that on Monday or Tuesday they will lodge an appeal to the court for replacing the regime to general, especially noting that the judge had to request written explanations from the detention facility where Seleznev is currently accommodated,” said Russian Consul General in Seattle Andrei Yushmanov.

Currently, Seleznev is being kept in a two-person prison cell and is not allowed to take daily walks. Earlier, the judge said that he would oblige the detention facility’s administration to explain in a written form why Seleznev is not being transferred to a general regime.

On July 5, Roman Seleznev was detained by US secret service agents in the Maldives and brought to Guam, and later, to Washington where he was accused of stealing and selling US citizens’ credit card data. He may face up to 30 years in prison if found guilty.

Seleznev’s father, Russian State Duma deputy Valery Seleznev, as well as the Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry, have called the incident a kidnapping.
