MOSCOW, August 28 (RIA Novosti) - More than 10 Islamic State (IS) terrorists were killed as a result on a Syrian government air strike that also destroyed 14 armored vehicles, Syrian state TV reported Thursday.

The air strike killed several IS militant group commanders in the eastern province of Deir al-Zor, according to Reuters.

Syrians, Arabs and foreigners are among the deceased, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights data.

Damascus’ war planes struck an IS headquarters building while a meeting of commanders was underway.

The IS previously went by either the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) or the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). On June 29, the group proclaimed itself a "caliphate" and changed its name to the Islamic State.

The group’s leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, has claimed religious authority over all Muslims globally.

IS extremists have been fighting against the Syrian government since 2012.

The militants currently control hundreds of square miles of territory in Syria and Iraq, ignoring international borders. The Syrian government is struggling to regain control over the seized territory within its borders.

The group’s size is unknown, but it is thought to include thousands of fighters, including many foreign jihadists.
