MOSCOW, August 27 (RIA Novosti) – A Moscow court has ruled to shut the doors of a McDonald’s restaurant across from the Kremlin Wall for three months over sanitation violations, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported from a Moscow courthouse Wednesday.

Judge Alexei Stekliyev ruled that the fast-food restaurant was guilty of breaching sanitary regulations, a violation that carries a fine or requires termination of operations according to Russian law. Stekliyev ordered the restaurant closed for 90 days.

Last week, Russian consumer watchdog Rospotrebnadzor, temporarily closed four popular McDonald’s restaurants in Moscow over sanitary violations. The first McDonald’s to open in the Soviet Union in 1990 was one of the four temporarily closed.

Rospotrebnadzor said McDonald’s products contain more fat, protein and carbohydrates than allowed by the country’s “technological norms." The regulator also said that different foods are kept in the same refrigerators, which contradicts sanitary laws.

A McDonalds’ representative said the products were kept together as the Moscow restaurants are too small, stating also that new products are delivered to the restaurants every day and thus the storage conditions become less important.

Russia’s consumer watchdog presented evidence in court, showing that some of the chain’s products contained the E.coli bacteria, which can cause gastroenteritis, urinary tract infections, and neonatal meningitis.

Earlier, Rospotrebnadzor launched sanitation checks on the major fast-food chain in 18 regions of central Russia. Inspections are currently underway in 16 other Russian regions besides Moscow and Moscow Region.

International health and consumer groups have, in the past, criticized McDonald’s for its menu and business practices.

The McDonald’s corporation, founded in 1940, is the world’s largest fast-food chain. The company has more than 35,000 outlets in 119 countries. McDonald's revenue for 2013 exceeded $28 billion.

As of the beginning of 2014, there were 424 of the chain’s branches operating in Russia.

According to a poll conducted by SuperJob’s Research Center, 62 percent of Russian respondents would support the closure of all McDonald’s restaurants in Russia.
