MOSCOW, August 27 (RIA Novosti) - Japanese authorities believe the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko to be a positive step toward a diplomatic solution, Kyodo news agency reported, citing Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga.

Japanese authorities are aware that bilateral talks to reach a peaceful solution of the Ukrainian crisis have been held between Russia and Ukraine, Suga said.

Japan hopes for the situation to be resolved as soon as possible and hopes that all parties involved would exercise restraint, Suga said, adding that Japan intends to look closely at the results of the meeting.

On Tuesday, a meeting among the Eurasian Customs Union, Ukraine and Russia was held in Minsk. Following the multilateral talks, Putin and Poroshenko met for a private conversation, which lasted for about two hours.

After the meeting with the Ukrainian leader, Putin said that the sides had agreed on the necessity to resume consultations on gas and energy issues.
