ST. LOUIS, MO, AUGUST 26 (RIA Novosti) – The police killing of an unarmed African-American teenager that provoked a fortnight of race-related protests in Ferguson, can yield positive changes for the city, funeral attendee Mike Muhammad said after the funeral service.

“After tragedy comes hope. So many tragic things happen in the world, but people can turn things around. What’s happening here in Ferguson is a trend of something turning around for St. Louis, Kansas City and abroad,” Muhammad, a plumber from Kansas, told RIA Novosti on Monday.

“It starts at the grass-roots and I’m very hopeful that that’s going to happen. I’d like to see jobs increase so that violence can decrease. If people recognize that re-education is indeed the key, I believe we’ll have better America,” he stressed.

Ferguson was paying on Monday its last respects to Michael Brown, shot dead by police officer Darren on the afternoon of August 9.

The killing triggered a wave of violent protests in St. Louis, Washington and other parts of the country, with the demonstrators, demanding the arrest of the white police officer.

The situation in Ferguson, where African-American residents make up 65 percent of the town’s population, has brought up the issues of racial discrimination, human rights violations as well as an increased militarization of law enforcers, criticized for bringing military tactics to civilian protests.
