MOSCOW, August 25 (RIA Novosti) - A strong earthquake with 7.0-magnitude shook southern Peru, US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The tremor was registered 42 kilometers (26 miles) north-east of the city of Tambo and 471 kilometers (293 miles) from the capital Lima. The quake struck at the depth of 58.9 kilometers (36.6 miles). No immediate damages have been reported.

Earthquakes of 6.0-magnitude and above are considered strong and may cause the destruction of infrastructure and human casualties.

The area of the Andes Mountains, where the quake took place, is a common subject to tremors. A 6.6-magnitude quake took place in the neighboring Chile Sunday with no reported damages. It followed a deadly 8.8-magnitude earthquake in 2012, which caused a tsunami and claimed 500 lives.
