MOSCOW, August 23 (RIA Novosti) - Representatives of Spanish Young Farmers and Ranchers of Catalonia (JARC) organization have burnt several flags of the European Union protesting against Brussels’ policy toward Russia and its measures taken after Moscow introduced import restrictions, El Pais reported.

According to the newspaper, the protesters made a pile of several tons of peaches in front of Lleida city government in Catalonia, placed the EU flags on top of it and set them on fire.

“No matter how much Brussels allocates - 155 million euro [$20 million] or 1500. As in the case of crises that the country saw before, all the funds go to government bodies, social insurance, as well as to the companies that work with transportation and packing of goods, while the farmers get nothing,” a JARC representative David Bordas was quoted as saying.

The European Commission has allocated from the European Union’s budget 125 million euros ($167.4 million) to the producers of a range of perishable fruits and vegetables over the Russian ban on food imports.

On August 6, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a bill on economic measures to protect the country’s security. The decree went into effect the next day, banning for a year the import of agricultural and food products from countries that had imposed sanctions on Russia over the Ukrainian crisis.

The list of banned products includes meat, fish, poultry and milk products, nuts, fruits and vegetables, but not infant foods or goods.
