Eastern Ukraine independence supporters have set up checkpoints and traffic cordons Friday to ensure the safe delivery of Russian humanitarian aid to Luhansk, a spokesman for the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic said.

DONETSK, August 22 (RIA Novosti) — Eastern Ukraine independence supporters have set up checkpoints and traffic cordons Friday to ensure the safe delivery of Russian humanitarian aid to Luhansk, a spokesman for the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic said.

“In order to ensure safe passage of the humanitarian convoy, the people’s militia has set up traffic cordons and checkpoints along the [convoy's] route," the spokesman said.

He said that Ukrainian forces continue shelling the area “in breach of all agreements to ensure the safety of the humanitarian convoy."

Russia has repeatedly called for safety to be ensured during the delivery of the humanitarian aid, including ceasefire between the conflicting parties.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UN Humanitarian Affairs Undersecretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos on Thursday also called for a ceasefire to deliver humanitarian aid to residents of Ukraine’s war-torn southeast.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has voiced security concerns and placed safety guarantees as its top priority. Due to the ongoing attacks in the country’s eastern regions, ICRC representatives have refused to accompany the convoy despite assurances of safe passage.
