US Attorney General Eric Holder says he hopes his visit to Ferguson will have a “calming influence” on a suburb that has been rocked by protests over the police killing of an unarmed African-American teenager.

FERGUSON, MO, AUGUST 20 (RIA Novosti) – US Attorney General Eric Holder says he hopes his visit to Ferguson will have a “calming influence” on a suburb that has been rocked by protests over the police killing of an unarmed African-American teenager.

“My hope is that that will give people some confidence that the appropriate things are being done by their federal government,” Holder said on Wednesday in Ferguson, Missouri where Michael Brown, 18, was shot and killed on August 9.

“My hope also is that through the trip that I'm making out here today and by expressing the importance of the way in which this investigation is going, that hopefully will have a calming influence on the area, if people know that a federal, thorough investigation is being done – is being manned by these very capable people,” the attorney general added.

Ferguson, a predominantly African-American suburb of St. Louis, has been shaken by protests and looting since Brown’s killing. Some 50 protestors were arrested on Tuesday during late-night demonstrations that were calmer than previously.

On Wednesday, demonstrators switched from the downtrodden suburb of Ferguson to St. Louis County prosecutor’s office, where they rallied against tardiness in the charging of Darren Wilson, 28, the police officer responsible for the shooting.
