FERGUSON, MO, AUGUST 20 (RIA Novosti) – Law enforcement officers in Ferguson, Missouri, were out in force and quick to clamp down on activists during protests over the police killing of an unarmed African-American teenager in the riot-ravaged town Tuesday night.

Tensions increased as one of the demonstrators threw a water bottle at the police in body armor and armed with batons and automatic guns. The officers pushed back protesters and arrested the suspect as other rally participants called for calm and demanded a violence-free night of demonstration.

Law enforcement officers and journalists were at least as sizeable a presence on the streets of downtown Ferguson as the dwindling number of protestors, many of whom paraded with raised arms in a position of surrendering that has become a symbol of the protest.

Ferguson, a mostly African-American suburb of St Louis of some 21,000 residents, has been shaken by protests since the police killing of Michael Brown, an unarmed teen, as he walked with a friend on a residential street in the afternoon on August 9.

Missouri National Guard troops have been deployed to tackle the violence, which has grown fiercer as peaceful protesters were joined by looters from California and New York, police said. Law enforcement officers have been criticized for using tear gas, rubber bullets and other heavy-handed measures.
