FERGUSON, MO, AUGUST 20 (RIA Novosti) — Law enforcement officers in Ferguson, Missouri, should let residents exercise their right to protest over the killing by police of an unarmed African-American teenager, shop assistant and protester Juan Williams told RIA Novosti.

“The police try to get the crowd to calm down. They think they should break up the crowd but I don’t think they should do that. I think they should let people protest. Telling people they will be arrested, I don’t like that,” Williams said.

Ferguson, a mostly African-American suburb of St Louis of some 21,000 residents, has been shaken by protests since the police killing of Michael Brown, an unarmed teen, as he walked with a friend on a residential street in the afternoon on August 9.

“There is a race problem here. If a black person shot a white person, his face would have been on the news the same day. The police officer shot him six times. He could have stopped him with two shots. I think the police wanted him dead,” added Williams.

Missouri National Guard troops have been deployed to tackle the violence, which has grown fiercer as peaceful protesters were joined by looters from California and New York, police said. Law enforcement officers have been criticized for using tear gas, rubber bullets and other heavy-handed measures.
