FERGUSON, MO, August 19 (RIA Novosti) - Crowds of angry protesters gathered in Ferguson on Tuesday afternoon, saying they would not be deterred by a heavy police presence and tear gas, rubber bullets and other heavy handed tactics, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.

Protesters said the expected several thousand people rallying on Tuesday night on a high street smashed store fronts, torched buildings and other remnants from more than a week of race-related violence.

Protests erupted in the US city of Ferguson, a suburb of St.Louis, on August 9, after police officer Darren Wilson shot dead Michael Brown, an 18-year-old black man. Brown was unarmed and had no criminal record. The autopsy showed that the teenager had been shot at least six times.

The demonstrations in Ferguson have been met with a heavy police response. On August 16, after several violent clashes, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew, which was lifted after two days of failing to stop the unrest.

On Tuesday, protesters threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at police officers who responded by firing stun grenades and using tear gas to disperse the angry crowd.

According to St. Louis County police, more than 100 people have been arrested since the beginning of the protests.
