MOSCOW, August 19 (RIA Novosti) – The 18-year-old Afro-American man, who was shot down in the city of Ferguson, Missouri, in early August, reportedly taunted and rushed towards the officer at full speed, according to a phoned-in account of the incident as reported by the CNN.

A woman, who identified herself as “Josie,” a friend of the police officer under investigation, phoned in to the KFTK radio station in St. Louis to give her account of the tragic events that triggered a way of nightly protests and looting in Ferguson.

The alleged eye-witness said it all had started when officer Darren Wilson rolled down his window and ordered Michael Brown, who was walking down the street together with a friend, to stop. Brown allegedly tried to push the policeman back into the car and grabbed for the officer’s pistol, before breaking free and running off.

Wilson then chased the teenager, telling Brown to freeze. The latter turned around and taunted the officer, saying he would never catch him, and then rushed at Wilson at full speed, prompting the policeman to shoot at him. One of the bullets hit Michael Brown in the head and he fell a few meters away from Wilson, the caller claimed.

A source close to the investigation confirmed this account, saying it was consistent with what the police officer had earlier told investigators.

The shooting on August 9 led to days of violent unrest across the city, prompting Missouri Governor Jay Nixon to call for the state’s National Guards.

US President Barack Obama said in a statement earlier that Attorney General Eric Holder was due to travel to the embattled city on Wednesday. He added the US Justice Department had opened an “independent, federal civil rights investigation” into the killing.
