The emergence of IS and other terrorist groups around the world have put the United States in greater danger than even before September 11 2001, says Representative Mike Rogers, head of the US House Intelligence Committee.

MOSCOW, August 18 (RIA Novosti) – The emergence of IS and other terrorist groups around the world have put the United States in greater danger than even before September 11 2001, says Representative Mike Rogers, head of the US House Intelligence Committee.

During an appearance Sunday on CBS’s Face the Nation, he said that all of the terrorist organizations, the Islamic State (IS), Boko Haram and al-Qaeda in Iraq, together pose a bigger threat to the United States because of their “wider threat matrix” than anything seen before. When posed with the question of whether this threat was larger than 9/11, he said Yes.

These comments come as the US is slowly resuming combat operations in Iraq. Barack Obama, on Sunday, authorized airstrikes against IS targets in Iraq. The aim is to destroy the American and Iraqi armored vehicle and helicopters seized in the past weeks.

Commenting on why IS is so dangerous, Rogers said that they are a “terrorist group with an army”. Their group “hold lands the size of Indiana, has tanks, helicopters… [and] they have over a billion dollars in precious metals and currency, and they are selling oil on the black market to the tune of a million dollars a day” he said.

Rogers does not think President Obama is doing enough globally to fight terrorism and called on him to increase the US’s presence in Iraq and to arm Syrian rebels friendly to the United States.
