KIEV, August 17 (RIA Novosti) - Ten civilians were killed and eight were injured in Donetsk over the last 24 hours as a result of military action, the press service of Donetsk City Council said Sunday.

"A total of 10 civilians died and eight received injuries of various severity in one day on August 16 as a result of military action in Donetsk... The situation in the city remains tense. According to the residents, shots from heavy weapons can be occasionally heard in all districts," the City Council said in a statement.

Artillery shelling damaged residential homes on six streets and caused outages at 50 transformer stations, which supply power to the Abakumovo and Trudovskaya mining villages.

Since the start of Kiev’s military operation against the independence supporters in southeastern Ukraine, nearly 1,400 people have been killed and more than 4,000 wounded in the region, including about 2,600 civilians and 29 children, according to a report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). At least 117,000 people have been forcibly displaced.
