MOSCOW, August 15 (RIA Novosti) - In light of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the Tokyo Narita Airport’s Quarantine department is strengthening measures to prevent the deadly virus from entering Japan, Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun reported Friday.

Although there are no direct flights from any West African countries to Narita Airport, there are fears that residents and travelers from Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria may transfer through to the Japanese airport.

The airport is taking several preventative measures including thermographic inspections, which require passengers with temperatures of over 36 degrees Celsius to go to a special health examination room for further inspection.

Any passengers with suspected cases of the Ebola virus disease are to immediately be taken to a hospital.

Those who have travelled to West Africa are being asked to voluntarily declare their visit when entering Japan. Public announcements are being made in Japanese and English and there are information boards and video displays in eight languages, Yomiuri Shimbun reported.

So far, several individuals have declared that they had been to West Africa, but none are suspected of having Ebola.

According to WHO, the current Ebola outbreak has already claimed 1,069 lives and infected 1,975 people since its outbreak in February in Guinea. The disease then spread to Nigeria, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of the infected. Symptoms of the disease include sudden onset of fever, weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat followed by vomiting, diarrhea, rash, kidney and liver problems, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding.
