MOSCOW, August 14 (RIA Novosti) - 16 people have been arrested and a number of officers injured in street clashes with police in the suburb of St. Louis, as the protests over the killing of 18-year-old teen by a policeman turned violent on Wednesday night.

A 19-year-old man was shot and wounded by police near the demonstrations after allegedly pointing a handgun at an officer, the local media reports.

Heavily armed police used tear gas and smoke bombs to disperse the crowd, who took to the streets of the city of Ferguson in protest over the fatal shooting of an unarmed African-American teenager. Protesters say the police was also firing rubber bullets.

Police say the protesters were throwing Molotov cocktails and other projects at the officers and one policeman is reported to be hit with a brick.

People in Ferguson have been protesting for five days since Saturday, August 9, the day of the fatal shooting.

Michael Brown was killed by a policeman, whose name the local police refuse to reveal. Police say the fire was opened after the teenager, who was stopped by the police, got into a “physical confrontation” with a Ferguson police officer. The officer was pushed back into his patrol vehicle in a struggle for his weapon and one shot being fired inside the car. The officer then exited the vehicle and shot Brown several times, police said.

Dorian Johnson, a friend of Brown who was with him that day, says it was the officer who grabbed the teenager around the neck. And when the teenager managed to escape and started running away with his hands in the air in surrender, the officer shot him multiple times.

There is a second witness who also confirms the teenager was unarmed on the street with his hands raised when the officer fired at him repeatedly.

Police refusal to reveal the name of the officer has triggered mass protests.  People stand with their hands up chanting “Hands up, don’t shoot.”

Earlier on Wednesday two reporters, one of the Washington Post and the other of the Huffington Post have been arrested after the police attempted to clear a McDonald’s restaurant. The reporters were later released without any charges, excuses or explanations.
